Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is celebrating the “quiet heroes” who stepped up in times of need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Markle appeared in the annual “CNN Heroes” special on Sunday, where she addressed the “year that has been universally challenging” amid the pandemic.

“Back in March, the COVID crisis hit hard, and overnight, everything seemed to change,” Markle said. “For many families, the impact of the pandemic has been catastrophic. And far too many were faced with a heartbreaking question: How am I going to put food on the table for my family?”

However, she said despite “this devastating reality,” people across the globe “saw the power of the human spirit and the remarkable ways that communities respond in challenging times.”

She added, “We saw the good in people, in our neighbors and in entire communities coming together to say they would not stand by while our neighbors went hungry.”

Markle continued to applaud those who “showed up to deliver” food to the doorsteps of the families who needed it during the pandemic.

“These moments reminded so many that they’re cared for,” she added.

“Tonight we’re celebrating these quiet heroes… They showed us, all of us, that even in the darkest times, when we come together, we have the power to remind someone else that there is hope and that we will be OK.”

The U.S. is the country with the most reported COVID-19 cases across the world. The pandemic has affected the lives of many — causing businesses the shutter and schools to go online. There are more than 1.6 million deaths due to the virus reported globally and over 72 million global cases, according to Johns Hopkins.
