As Democrats call for their Republican colleagues to strip Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) of her committee assignments, some lawmakers are pushing to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from her assignment to the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Omar fired back in a statement as she accused Republicans of trying to distract from the controversy surrounding Greene. She wrote, “Republicans will do anything to distract from the fact that they have not only allowed but elevated members of their own caucus who encourage violence.”

“It’s time to stop whitewashing the actions of the violent conspiracy theorists, who pose a direct and immediate threat to their fellow Members of Congress and our most fundamental democratic processes,” she added.

Greene has come under fire after a series of controversial comments, adherence to conspiracy theories, and apparent support for killing prominent Democrats came to light.

The House is expected to vote on Thursday to strip Greene of her assignment to the Education and Labor and Budget committees.

As Democrats push to punish Greene, Republicans are moving to strip Omar of her committee assignments. Reps. Brian Babin (R-Texas), Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), Jody Hice (R-Ga.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), and Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) sponsored an amendment to do so based “in light of conduct she has exhibited.”

Republicans criticized Omar in 2019 after she said: “it’s all about the Benjamins baby,” following House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) vow to take “action” over her criticism of Israel.

Omar apologized for her comments and said she had learned about the “painful history of anti-Semitic tropes.”
