House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated Republicans and Democrats are struggling to agree on the scope for the commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“The disagreements that we’re having about having a bipartisan commission, and it must be bipartisan, is on the scope,” Pelosi said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

She added, “They are, the other side, they don’t want any findings included in how we go. They don’t want… they want to treat something like Black Lives Matter peaceful demonstrations in a similar manner as they would do January 6th.”

Pelosi stressed it needs to be bipartisan and “it cannot be bipartisan if the scope of it is to not draw any conclusion about what happened that day as the premise for how we would go forward and investigate it.”

She continued, “We must investigate and we must get the truth for the American people.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) rejected Pelosi’s proposal for the commission last month, as IJR previously reported.

“If Congress is going to attempt some broader analysis of toxic political violence across this country, then in that case, we cannot have artificial cherry-picking of which terrible behavior does and does not deserve scrutiny,” McConnell said.

He added, “We could do something narrow that looks at the Capitol, or we could potentially do something broader to analyze the full scope of the political violence problem in this country.”

McConnell argued, “We cannot land at some artificial, politicized halfway point.”

Pelosi responded to McConnell’s remarks during one of her press conferences.

“I’m disappointed in what I heard the minority leader yesterday, McConnell, say on the floor. It was really quite stunning, because in my brief conversation with him on this subject, I had the impression that he wanted to have a January 6 similar to 9/11 Commission,” Pelosi said.

She continued, “But what he said on the floor was really a departure from that.”
