Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) is launching a campaign for U.S. Senate after Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) made known he will not seek re-election.
Portman announced in January that he would not seek re-election. His term expires in 2022.
“I am running to fight like hell in the US Senate to cut workers in on the deal,” Ryan said.
He added, “Ohioans are working harder than ever, they’re doing everything right, and they’re still falling behind. Countries all over the world are investing billions in infrastructure, education, health care, and their workforce to out-compete American businesses and workers. Our workers need a game plan to level the playing field and bring jobs home to Ohio.”

At the time of his announcement of his retirement, Portman said, “We live in an increasingly polarized country where members of both parties are being pushed further to the right and further to the left, and that means too few people who are actively looking to find common ground. This is not a new phenomenon, of course, but a problem that has gotten worse over the past few decades.”
He added, “This is a tough time to be in public service.”
Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno, Ohio Republican Party Chairwoman Jane Timken and former state Treasurer Josh Mandel are among the several Republican Senate hopefuls running for Portman’s seat.
