Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is defending Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), the No. 3 Republican in the House, as her colleagues are reportedly looking to strip her of her leadership position.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Romney wrote, “Every person of conscience draws a line beyond which they will not go: Liz Cheney refuses to lie.”

“As one of my Republican Senate colleagues said to me following my impeachment vote: ‘I wouldn’t want to be a member of a group that punished someone for following their conscience,'” he added.

House Republicans are reportedly looking to replace Cheney as frustration over her criticism of former President Donald Trump mounts. A source close to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told The Hill, “There is no way that Liz will be conference chair by month’s end.”

“When there is a vote, it won’t be a long conference; it will be fast. Everyone knows the outcome,” the individual continued. “She is a big distraction. I don’t see McCarthy saving her this time.”

Earlier this week, Cheney — who was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump — ripped into Trump and his supporters for claiming that the 2020 presidential election was “stolen.”

“The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system,” she wrote in a tweet.

Now McCarthy and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) are reportedly looking for someone who is “not only relentlessly on message, but also someone who does not pose a threat to them and their power” to replace the Wyoming Congresswoman.

While McCarthy has not publicly said that he would call for a vote to strip her of her leadership role, he is reportedly frustrated with her.

Axios reported on Tuesday that he was caught on a hot mic before an interview on “Fox & Friends” trashing her.

“I think she’s got real problems,” he told Fox News’ Steve Doocey.

He continued, “I’ve had it with … I’ve had it with her. You know, I’ve lost confidence. … Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place.”
