House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is urging Congress to pass President Joe Biden’s American Jobs and Families Plans after a disappointing jobs report.

“We need to take bold action to Build Back Better from this crisis by investing in our nation, our workers and our families,” Pelosi said in a statement on Friday.

She continued, “House Democrats are already at work developing strong jobs legislation, which will create millions of good-paying jobs revitalizing our nation’s infrastructure and laying the foundation for a generation of economic growth.”

Pelosi called on the government to “invest in human infrastructure with the American Families Plan which strengthens the child care and early education support that families need: children learning, parents earning.”

She added, “As we build on the progress of the historic Rescue Plan, Democrats in Congress hope to work in a bipartisan spirit to Build Back Better. However, the evidence is clear that the economy demands urgent action, and Congress will not be deterred or delayed from delivering transformational investments For The People.”

President Joe Biden responded to the report while delivering remarks on Friday, as IJR reported.

“This morning, we learned that our economy created 266,000 jobs in April. It hadn’t been adjusted again yet, but that’s what it says, 266, and listening to commentators today… you might think that we should be disappointed,” Biden said.

He went on, “But when we passed the American Rescue Plan, I want to remind everybody, it was designed to help us over the course of a year not 60 days, a year.”

Biden indicated the administration “never thought that after the first 50 or 60 days, everything would be fine. There’s more evidence that our economy is moving in the right direction, but it’s clear we have a long way to go.”

A total of 916,000 jobs were expected to be added in March.
