Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) says former President Donald Trump would “obviously” be a key individual for a Jan. 6 commission to hear from as it investigates the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Speaking to CNN’s Manu Raju on Tuesday, Murkowski indicated she believes the commission should be focused on the events of January 6 and not other incidents of violence.

“If you’re really making this a very broad brush approach, it might be difficult to really get value from a specific type of commission. But again, I think this is something where you need to look closely to the details and how it’s configured,” she said.

Raju asked, “Do you think former President Trump should talk to this commission?”

“If you put together a commission that is focused on the events of January 6th, I think he’s obviously a very key individual,” Murkowski said.

Trump was impeached by the House in January on the charge of “incitement of insurrection” for what lawmakers allege was his role in inciting a mob of his supporters to storm the Capitol.

However, the Senate acquitted him of the charge.

During the Senate’s impeachment trial, Trump did not testify despite efforts by Democratic impeachment managers to get the former president to provide testimony “either before or during the Senate impeachment trial.”

Trump’s lawyers dismissed the request and claimed it showed Democrats “cannot prove your allegations.”
