President Joe Biden is reiterating his disappointment with the Texas abortion ban, calling it “un-American.”

A reporter asked Biden Friday what his message to women in Texas would be and what his administration can do to protect abortion rights on the federal level.

Biden replied, “The most pernicious thing about the Texas law, it sort of creates a vigilante system where people get rewards to go out… And it just seems un-American.”

He added, “I respect people who think… who don’t support Roe v. Wade. I respect their views. I respect those who believe life begins in the moment of conception. I respect that, I don’t agree with it, I respect that.”

The president explained to reporters he was “told that there are possibilities within the existing law, to have the Justice Department look and see whether are there things that can be done, that can limit the independent action of individuals and enforcing a state law.”

He continued, “I don’t know enough to give you an answer yet.”

Do you believe life begins at the moment of conception?

During a White House press briefing Thursday, a reporter pressed White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on why Biden supports abortion “when his own Catholic faith teaches abortion is morally wrong.”

She replied, “He believes that it’s a woman’s right. It’s a woman’s body and it’s her choice.”

The reporter went on to ask who Biden believes should look out for the unborn child. Psaki explained, “He believes it’s up to a woman to make those decisions and to a woman to make those decisions with her doctor.”

She added, “I know you’ve never faced those choices, nor have you ever been pregnant. But for women out there who have faced those choices this is an incredibly difficult thing. The president believes that right should be respected.”

The Texas law went into effect Wednesday, banning abortions after six weeks, as IJR reported.
