The majority of Americans fear there will be a repeat of events similar to those of the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

According to an Axios-Momentive poll, 57% of Americans believe a repeat of January 6 is “likely to occur again in the next few years.”

Fifty-eight percent support the work of the House select committee investigating the riot. Only 55% say President Joe Biden legitimately won the election.

Laura Wronski, senior manager for research science at Momentive, explained, “It’s dispiriting to see that this shocking thing we all witnessed last year hasn’t changed people’s perceptions.”

According to 63%, the events of January 6 have “changed the way Americans think about their democratic government.”

The poll was conducted from January 1 to 3 of 2022, surveying 2,649 adults.

Thursday marks the first anniversary of the riot at the Capitol. Law enforcement is ramping up security efforts in preparation for the anniversary, as CNN reports.

“The threat of domestic violent extremists is a very great one,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said to reporters.

Former President Donald Trump was expected to hold a press conference on the anniversary but announced he is canceling it, as IJR reported.

“In light of the total bias and dishonesty of the January 6 Unselect Committee of Democrats, two failed Republicans, and the Fake News Media, I am canceling the January 6th Press Conference at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, and instead will discuss many of those important topics at my rally on Saturday, January 15, in Arizona — It will be a big crowd!” Trump said in a statement.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are expected to deliver remarks to commemorate the day. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the events to commemorate the day “are intended as an observance of reflection, remembrance and recommitment, in a spirit of unity, patriotism and prayerfulness.”
