President Joe Biden mistakenly called Vice President Kamala Harris the first lady when announcing that the vice president’s husband contracted COVID-19.
“There’s been a little change in the arrangement with who’s on the stage because the first lady’s husband contracted COVID,” Biden said on Tuesday.
When reminded that he is the first lady’s husband, Biden added, “That’s right. She’s fine. It’s me…The second lady, the first gentleman. How ’bout that?”

Harris’ office announced Tuesday her husband, Doug Emhoff, contracted the virus.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the Vice President will not participate in tonight’s event. The Vice President tested negative for COVID-19 today and will continue to test,” Harris’ deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said in a statement.
The vice president was expected to participate in an event on Equal Pay Day along with Biden.
“One person I’m particularly proud of…is Kamala Harris. As I said, Kamala chose not to take a chance since her husband contracted COVID, although he’s feeling very well I’m told,” Biden said. “He’s fine but out of an abundance of caution she decided she wasn’t going to join us today but let’s send her our love because she’s something else.”
Ahead of the event, Harris spoke at the White House at the Equal Pay Day Summit.
“Our economy just has not been working as it should for the women of our nation,” she said.
Harris continued, “If we are going to continue to grow our economy and to be competitive and lead the world in the 21st century, we simply cannot afford to leave half of our workforce behind. To build an economy that works for all of us, we must build an economy that works for women. That is one of our administration’s central missions.”
Additionally, Harris met with current and former members of the U.S. Women’s Soccer team to discuss equal pay, as ABC News reported.
