President Joe Biden faced criticism after appearing to suggest the Irish are “stupid.”

While delivering remarks on St. Patrick’s Day, Biden joked, “Father, before I begin: Bless me, father, for I’m about to sin.”

He added, “Well, I just want you to know, I may be Irish, but I’m not stupid. I married Dominic Giacoppa’s daughter.”

Biden continued, “You know, the good spirits and feelings as well that exist on St. Patrick’s Day seems to be one of those few times — and I shouldn’t say few — we should have more times like this for Democrats and Republicans to get together, and we actually not only agree on one thing, but we remind ourselves we actually like each other. That’s a useful thing.”

The president received criticism for his comments from users on Twitter.

What an incredibly 'Biden' thing to just randomly blurt out on St. Patrick's Day… https://t.co/Oo7DKpJZjK

This is not the first time Biden appeared to suggest the Irish are stupid. He made the same statement in December 2019 while campaigning for president in Iowa.

Biden is not the only one to receive criticism for remarks he made on St. Patrick’s Day. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sparked backlash after she read a poem by U2’s Bono, as IJR reported.

“Oh Saint Patrick he drove out the snakes. With his prayers but that’s not all it takes,” Pelosi said.

Mentioning the Russian invasion of Ukraine, she added, “From the psycho in this human family Ireland’s sorrow and pain Is now the Ukraine. And Saint Patrick’s name now Zelenskyy.”

Earlier on Thursday, Pelosi said she would be reading the poem “which you might find interesting.”
