In a 53-47 vote, the Senate approved her nomination Thursday afternoon.

Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Susan Collins (R-Maine) were the only Republicans to back her nomination.

Jackson will be the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

President Joe Biden nominated her to fill Justice Stephen Breyer’s seat when he retires later this year.

According to the White House press office, “Jackson joined the President and other White House senior staff in the Roosevelt Room to watch the results of the Senate vote on her nomination to the Supreme Court,” a White House pool report read.

Breyer’s decision to retire gave Biden his first opportunity to nominate a justice to the Supreme Court.

Her confirmation will not alter the 6-3 conservative majority on the court.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) celebrated Jackson’s confirmation in a statement as she said, “Today is a day of great pride and patriotism for our nation, as Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson makes history as the first Black woman to be confirmed to the Supreme Court. “

“During her nomination process, Judge Jackson demonstrated the magnificence of her legal mind, her unyielding commitment to justice and her remarkable poise…On the bench, Judge Jackson will be a relentless defender of individual rights and the rule of law.  American families will greatly benefit from her extensive courtroom experience and background as a public defender that she will bring to the Court,” she continued.

Finally, Pelosi said, “With Judge Jackson’s historic confirmation, our nation takes an important step toward realizing our most cherished ideals.  On behalf of the House, we wish her all the best as she continues her devoted public service.”
