Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) signed a bill banning nonbinary birth certificates.

NBC News noted Oklahoma is the first state to prohibit the use of a nonbinary option on birth certificates, citing Lambda Legal.

Oklahoma Rep. Sheila Dills, the House sponsor of the bill, issued a statement after the House passed the bill last week.

“People are free to believe whatever they want about their identity, but science has determined people are either biologically male or female at birth,” Dills said.

She added, “We want clarity and truth on official state documents. Information should be based on established medical fact and not an ever-changing social dialogue.”

Last month, Stitt signed a bill banning transgender women from competing on female sports teams.

“When it comes to sports and athletics: Girls should compete against girls. Boys should compete against boys,” Stitt said.

He added, “Let’s be very clear — that’s all this bill says.”

The governor continued, “We are protecting women’s sports. We’re ensuring a level playing field for female athletes who work hard to train hard, who are committed to their team, who have dreams to be No. 1 in their sport, who deserve a fair competition.”

Stitt recognized “men are biologically different than women.”

The outlet pointed out state lawmakers proposed 238 bills that would limit LGBTQ rights between January 1 and March 15.

Gay rights advocates filed a lawsuit against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) after he signed a law prohibiting instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.

“This effort to control young minds through state censorship — and to demean LGBTQ lives by denying their reality — is a grave abuse of power,” the lawsuit says.

It continues, “The United States Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed that LGBTQ people and their families are at home in our constitutional order. The State of Florida has no right to declare them outcasts, or to treat their allies as outlaws, by punishing schools where someone dares to affirm their identity and dignity.”
