One thing remained standing after a fire broke out at a church in Texas.

Fox 4 News reported a fire tore through the Balsora Baptist Church in Bridgeport on Friday.

As the smoke cleared, the sanctuary cross could be seen standing.

Pastor Sonny Smith told the outlet, “To me, that was a sign from God saying don’t worry, I’m still here and I’m going to lead you forward.”

Smith said the congregation would be meeting outside near the remains of the building.

“Shed some tears together over what was — but also create some excitement for what God plans for us in the future,” Smith said.

The pastor continued, “Well, I can tell you what’s inside of our church family. It’s faith.”

He told Fox 4 News God is “good. In the good times and in the bad times you can always depend on him.”

Wise County Emergency Services Department No. 2. told Fox News the incident is “a devastating loss to our community” but the cross was a “sight to behold.”

The statement continues:

“The fire took the structure, but not the cross. A symbol that the building was just that, a building. The Church is the congregation, and where 2 or more gather, there He shall be also.”

Fire officials said as firefighters fought the fire, the roof of the church began to collapse with crews still inside, as Fox News reported.

The cause of the blaze was reportedly still under investigation.

CBS News noted the church stood for over 120 years.
