Actress Issa Rae revealed the reason behind her decision to join the Barbie movie.

During an interview with “Today,” Rae thought back to conversations she had with director Greta Gerwig.

“I was like, ‘This sounds crazy, but OK. Let me just read the script,’” Rae said.

She added, “When you read the script, you’re like, ‘Oh, I get it!’ It’s very funny, and it’s just very specific to her.”

Rae is the writer and star of the HBO show “Insecure” and the upcoming HBO Max show “RapSh!t”

The actress spoke with “Today” as part of the show’s first-ever cover series.

When asked about her experience doing the cover shoot, Rae explained, “I hadn’t done any photo shoots in like six months.”

She continued, “This was such an amazing experience.”

Margot Robbie stars alongside Ryan Gosling in the movie.

Vouge explained the film “will center on a doll living in Barbieland, who’s forced to leave due to her so-called imperfections—setting off on an adventure in the real world and discovering along the way that perfection can only truly be found within.”

Robbie spoke with the publication about creating the live-action film.

“It comes with a lot of baggage!” Robbie said.

She added, “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…'”

The film will be released in July 2023.
