A singer’s performance during a White House event is confusing Twitter users.

On Tuesday, the White House hosted an event to celebrate the Inflation Reduction Act.

The celebration began with a performance by James Taylor of his song “Fire and Rain.”

Twitter users were quick to mock the performance.

One user called Taylor a “Peak Boomer.”

Another pointed out that the song is about “suicide, addiction and a mental hospital.”

Makes sense. This song was written in 1968, when a disastrous, big-spending president was forced to abandon his re-elect effort because of his unpopularity. https://t.co/ScMCrT0X7W

The stock market is cratering and inflation is through the roof.

Never fear, the Democrats have brought in climate change activist James Taylor to sing you a song. https://t.co/4TEvx1n98E

Taylor wrote it in 1968. Per NPR, the song “is about a friend who committed suicide, Taylor's addiction to heroin, & a mental hospital.” The song has nothing to with inflation, just like #InflationReductionAct has nothing to with reducing #inflation. https://t.co/JV1RruSNSu

President Joe Biden praised Taylor’s performance.

“How about James Taylor?” Biden said. “A voice that heals our soul and unites the nation.”

He signed the bill into law last month.

“Today offers proof that the soul of America is vibrant. The future of America is bright and the promise of America is real,” Biden told the crowd on the White House lawn.

At the time of the signing in August, Biden argued the “American people won, and the special interests lost.”

He added, “This administration began amid a dark time in America … a once-in-a-century pandemic, devastating joblessness, clear and present threats to democracy and the rule of law, doubts about America’s future itself — and yet we’ve not wavered, we’ve not flinched, and we’ve not given in.”

Biden also suggested the “future of America is bright, and the promise of America is real. And just beginning.”

Forbes explained the act includes funding for “making health care and prescription drugs more affordable, fighting climate change and taxing wealthy corporations.”

The outlet noted after the Senate passed the bill, Biden claimed the legislation would provide relief to Americans.

However, one early study found the act likely will not bring prices down at all.
