House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) received an apology from Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) over comments he made about the attack on her husband.

Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman first reported on the matter.

“[Glenn Youngkin] has sent [Speaker Pelosi] a hand-written note apologizing for his remarks about the speaker in the wake of the attack on Paul Pelosi,” Sherman tweeted.

According to The Washington Post, Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill confirmed she received the letter and that it was postmarked on November 1.

He reportedly did not provide any additional details, but said the House speaker had accepted the apology.

A spokeswoman for Youngkin released a statement on behalf of the governor on Wednesday, via text message, as the Post reported.

She said the statement was from a TV interview that had not aired yet.

“My full intention on my comments was to categorically state that violence and the kind of violence that was perpetrated against Speaker Pelosi’s husband is not just unacceptable, it’s atrocious. And I didn’t do a great job with that. And so listen, it was a personal note and it was one between me and the speaker, just to reflect those sentiments,” the statement read.

Youngkin sparked backlash after he made the remark about the attack last month at a rally.

“There’s no room for violence anywhere, but we’re going to send [Pelosi] back to be with him in California,” Youngkin said at the time.

The report on the apology comes just a day after Nancy Pelosi opened up about the attack during an interview with CNN, as IJR reported.

“I was sleeping in Washington D.C., I had just gotten in the night before from San Francisco and I hear the doorbell ring and think, it’s five something, it must be the wrong apartment,” she told the network.

Nancy Pelosi continued, “They said, ‘We have to come in and talk to you.’ And I’m thinking my children, my grandchildren, I never thought it would be Paul because I knew he wouldn’t be out and about shall we say.”

She explained the hard part for her was that her husband “was not the target and he’s the one who is paying the price.”

Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer at their home in San Francisco by a male suspect last month, according to authorities.
