Critics Slam ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ for Clue Involving Murder

HOLBROOK, NY - SEPTEMBER 26: A sign for Gabby Petito is seen outside of a funeral home on September 26, 2021 in Holbrook, New York. As the search continues into a second week in Florida to find Brian Laundrie, who is a person of interest, the family of Gabby Petito holds a public funeral in her hometown of Long Island. Critics are taking issue with a clue used during an episode of “Celebrity Jeopardy!”

During the show last night, the clue stated, “In 2021, fugitive Brian Laundrie ended his days in Fla’s Myakkahatchee Creek area, home to these long & toothy critter.”

Watch the moment below:

Brian Laundrie, who confessed to killing Gabby Petito before committing suicide in Florida, was featured as an answer on Celebrity @Jeopardy last night.

It read, “Brian Laundrie ended his days,” referencing his suicide.

CNN reported in February the autopsy showed Laundrie died from a gunshot wound to the head less than a year after he returned to Florida from a cross-country trip without his fiancé Gabby Petito.

Her family went on to report her missing.

Later that September, Petito’s body was discovered in Wyoming.

Laundrie reportedly confessed to murdering Petito in a letter discovered with his remains.

Critics on Twitter were quick to point out the insensitivity of the clue on the game show.

One user tweeted, “WTAF [Jeopardy]. Couldn’t you have come up with ANY other clue for ‘alligators’ than using Gabby Petito’s murderer?”

Another user wrote, “You lost me on that Gabby Petito murder reference. It was insensitive to her family and other abuse victims. Unfortunately I will never watch the show again. Shame on all involved in this production.”

One tweet argued the show does not “deserve any viewers until they publicly apologize to the Petito family.”

Having Gabby Petito's murderer as a @CelebJeopardy @Jeopardy clue when that happened only last year is beyond tacky.

Laundrie’s family attorney, Steven Bertolino, issued a statement to TMZ on behalf of the family in response to the clue.

“The entire Laundrie family is appalled and concurs with all of the comments on social media on how distasteful this was. I believe an apology is due,” Bertolino said.

The show recently made headlines after host Ken Jennings shouted “oh sh*t!” when revealing an answer to a clue during a show.
