President Joe Biden received criticism from Twitter users after making a claim about assault weapons following a shooting at Michigan State University.
While delivering remarks Tuesday, Biden said, “I want to take a moment to say our hearts are with the students and families of Michigan State University.”
He acknowledged three lives were lost while five others were injured.
Biden stressed something has to be done to put a stop to gun violence.
Additionally, he recognized the day marks five years since the shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 14 students and three educators.
Biden then went on to make a claim about assault weapons.
“I’m gonna say something that’s always controversial but there is no rationale for assault weapons and magazines that hold 50, 70 bullets,” he said.
The crowd let out an applause following his remark.

Podcast host Graham Allen reacted, saying, “Biden using the MSU tragedy as a way to strip away the rights of Americans is completely ABHORRENT. He should be ashamed of himself.”

One tweet pointed out Biden is “unaware the suspect who is a felon, used handguns.”

Yes there is and it's simple… I am a law abiding citizen with no record with the second amendment. More importantly, my guns haven't hurt anyone.

Authorities have identified the gunman as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, as CNN reported.
MSU Interim Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman said police had recovered a weapon but at the time had not determined whether it was used in the shooting.
After the shooting, McRae was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, per CNN.
“We have no idea why he came to campus to do this,” Rozman said hours after McRae opened fire.
