Vice President Kamala Harris insists a new telescope being built in South Africa could answer some major questions.

During an event on Tuesday, Harris said, “In South Africa, part of the world’s largest radio telescope is under construction which will help answer some of the biggest questions of humanity. About galaxies! About gravity!”

Harris’ comments referred to the construction of the largest radio astronomy observatory in South Africa, known as the Square Kilometre Array.

As NBC News notes, “The mega telescope consists of huge clusters of dishes and antennas spread across remote parts of South Africa and Western Australia.”

“The Square Kilometre Array has been called one of the biggest scientific projects of the 21st century. The ultra-sensitive instrument will be used to probe some of the most baffling cosmic mysteries, ranging from dark matter, dark energy and how galaxies were formed to the origin of short but intense pulses of radio emissions known as fast radio bursts,” it added.

The scientists behind the project say the new array will be able to operate at four times the resolution and five times the sensitivity of existing telescopes. Additionally, it will be able to survey the sky 60 times faster.

Harris has previously faced mockery for some of her comments involving space.

At a Congressional Space Medal of Honor ceremony to honor former NASA astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnke, Harris said, “Which brings me to May 30th, 2020. Bob and Doug returned to the Kennedy Space Center. They suited up. They waved to their families, and they rode an elevator up nearly 20 stories.”

“They strapped into their seats and waited as the tanks beneath filled with tens of thousands of gallons of fuel. And then they launched,” she continued, adding, “Yeah, they did.”

Additionally, in October 2021, Harris was mocked after releasing a video that reportedly featured child actors.

In one scene of the video, she told the children they were “going to learn so much” and “literally see the craters on the moon with your own eyes.”

“With your own eyes. I’m telling you,” she added.
