Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is sharing a major update about his plans ahead of the 2024 election.

In a video post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Manchin announced he would not seek re-election in 2024.

“After months of deliberation and long conversation with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” he said.

The senator added, “I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate.”

Manchin was a critical vote for Democrats during President Joe Biden’s first two years in office as the Senate was evenly divided.

Along with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), Manchin became a regular source of frustration for progressives as he refused to provide his vote to remove the 60-vote threshold in the Senate and blocked Biden’s massive Build Back Better bill in 2021.

If Manchin decided to run for re-election, he would be facing an uphill climb as he would be running as a Democrat in a state former President Donald Trump carried in 2020 by nearly 40 points.
