Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is taking issue with a bill in New York that could force certain Chic-fil-A locations to break with their policy of closing on Sunday.

“The State of New York — where I’m at — wants to pass a law to make Chic-fil-A stay open on Sunday,” Graham explained during an appearance on Fox News on Wednesday.

He continued:

“If you can have a Satan club in high school, surely they can close on Sunday because they believe it’s the Lord’s Day… To the Chic-fil-A people, you stand your ground, I’ve got your back.”

Graham added, “It’s illegal what they’re trying to do. Trying to make Chick-fil-A stay open on Sunday violates their constitutional rights. And this is one of the most liberal places in the world. And we’re going to fight you, New York! We’re not going to give in to this… This is God’s chicken.”

Graham insisted conservatives are “tolerant.” However, he argued, “It’s time to push back. I’m sure this is a publicity stunt.”

“But the idea that the State of New York is going to make a company change its policies it’s had from its founding. They want to have one day off for their employees to recognize the Lord. And they can do it. And to the people in New York pushing this, you’re in for one hell of a fight,” he added.

The New York State Assembly is expected to consider a bill that would require some Chic-fil-A locations to ditch their tradition of closing on Sundays.

Under proposed bill A08336, food service locations and other transportation facilities that are “owned and operated by certain public authorities” would be required to be open seven days a week.

According to NBC New York, the bill specifically mentions Chic-fil-A “in its justification for the proposed law.”

The company explained it closes on Sunday so employees can spend time with their families and “worship if they choose.”

Assemblyman Tony Simone, who sponsored the bill, argued, “Look, if you want to eat fried chicken while traveling over the holidays, then Chick-fil-A should be open on Sundays.”
