The world premiere stage adaptation of “Purple Rain,” based on Prince’s film and album of the same name, will open in Minneapolis, Prince’s hometown.

The musical, set to open in spring 2025, will be performed at the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s State Theatre in Minneapolis, according to the Associated Press. The music and lyrics are by Prince; the story is by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.

Jacobs-Jenkins is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his plays “Gloria” and “Everybody,” according to the AP. Lileana Blain-Cruz, nominated for a Tony Award for “The Skin of Our Teeth,” will direct.

“Prince talked about adapting ‘Purple Rain’ for the stage for years. It’s only fitting that we launch this world premiere musical version in the city where it all began,” said L. Londell McMillan, former Prince manager and Larry Mestel, founder & CEO of Primary Wave Music, in a statement. “We’re very excited for the creative team to be inspired by the Minneapolis sound and the unparalleled and unique spirit of the city that Prince inspired.”

Production dates, cast and details have yet to be released.

“Purple Rain” tells a somewhat autobiographical story of an up-and-coming rock musician in the Minneapolis club scene who is juggling a tumultuous home life and a budding romance, the AP reported. The film, which won an Oscar for its song score, includes the songs “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry” and “Take Me With U.” The film was released in 1984.

The stage version will eventually head to Broadway after its run release in Minneapolis.

Prince died in 2016.
