What does one wear when handing out the Oscar for best costume design? If you’re John Cena, the answer is not much.
The actor and WWE wrestler got onstage with nothing but a modesty pouch Sunday night, according to People.
Cena, 46, carried with him an oversized envelope to cover his private area. And he wore Birkenstocks.
The barely there look harkened back to the Oscar ceremony 1974.
“At the 46th Academy Awards, 1974, David Niven was in the middle of introducing Elizabeth Taylor when a nude man — a streaker — ran across the stage,” host Jimmy Kimmel said as he was introducing Cena, People reported. “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today?”
Enter Cena.
“The pair joked Cena was supposed to streak when Kimmel offered the ‘what if,’ but got cold feet at the last second,” People reported. “’Honestly, you should feel shame right now for suggesting such a tasteless idea,’ Cena quipped to Kimmel, adding, ‘The male body is not a joke.’”
The Oscar went to “Poor Things.”
“Costumes.… they are so important. Maybe the most important thing there is,” Cena said.
By the end of the presentation, Cena was covered in a makeshift toga.
Not all of the attention Cena received was positive.
