Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked golfer, was arrested Friday morning as he was driving to the Valhalla Golf Club for round 2 of the PGA Championship.

The Louisville Metro Police charged Scheffler with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic, ESPN reported.

The assault charge is a felony, while the other three are misdemeanors.

The incident occurred as traffic was stopped after a man was killed after he was hit by a shuttle bus outside the golf course at about 5 a.m. ET.

Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET and went to Valhalla.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington witnessed what happened. He said Scheffler attempted to drive around the scene of the crash and drove onto a median.

When a police officer attempted to stop him, Scheffler continued 10 to 20 yards toward the golf course entrance.

The officer attached himself to Scheffler’s car.

After Scheffler stopped and rolled down his window, the officer grabbed the golfer’s arm and pulled him out, Darlington said.

The officer then put Scheffler in handcuffs after he pushed him up against the vehicle.

As Darlington stood by the entrance,  Scheffler asked him, “Can you help?”

The officer instructed Darlington to not get involved.

“You need to get out of the way,” the officer said. “Right now, he’s going to jail, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

The second round of the championship was scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m. ET. Scheffler was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET.
