Sidi Mohamed Abdellahi, who allegedly tried to murder a Jewish man in Chicago in broad daylight on Saturday morning, entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was released into the interior, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered Abdellahi — originally from Mauritania — on March 31, 2023, near San Ysidro, California, according to an ICE spokesperson, before he was released into the interior of the country. Abdellahi now faces six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and one count of aggravated battery after allegedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” and opening fire on police officers responding to the scene of the initial shooting.

“On Oct. 29, officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Chicago lodged an immigration detainer with Cook County Jail in Chicago, Illinois on Sidi Mohamed Abdellahi, 22, a Mauritanian national, following his arrest for six counts of attempted murder and four counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm/police officer/fireman,” ICE spokeswoman Erin Bultje said in a statement shared with the DCNF.

Notably, Abdellahi, 22, does not currently stand accused of any hate crime-related offenses for the shooting, despite outcry from Jewish groups and indications that the shooting may have been motivated by religious animus. Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson released a statement on the shooting, though he drew criticism for omitting the victim’s religious identity after releasing a more descriptive and pointed statement following the murder of a Palestinian-American child in October 2023.

The U.S. has seen a notable increase in antisemitic crimes and behavior in the wake of the savage October 7 Hamas terror attacks against Israel, and Abdellahi stands as the latest illegal immigrant who entered the U.S. on the Biden-Harris administration’s before proceeding to allegedly commit serious violent crimes.
