A man in Michigan broke down in tears Tuesday while telling a CNN reporter about his vote for Vice President Kamala Harris based on her position on abortion.
Harris has made her support for abortion a centerpiece of her campaign, often criticizing former President Donald Trump for appointing three Supreme Court justices, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, who joined the court’s majority opinion in a June 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and upheld a Mississippi law that restricted abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy. The Harris voter, Jason Faasse, told a CNN reporter that his daughters motivated his vote.

“I have three daughters, four children overall, and women’s rights is pretty important to them and my daughters,” Faasse said while choking up. “Sorry, I’m getting a little emotional about that, I didn’t think that I was going to do that. But, you know, just their bodies, their choice type of mentality. You know, I want them to grow up in a world that’s welcoming to everybody. So, yeah, that’s why I cast my vote today.”
Abortion was a top issue for Democrats, including Harris, during the 2022 midterms, where Republicans failed to meet expectations of a nation-wide “red wave.”
A New York Times/Siena College poll of battleground voters released Sunday noted that 27% of women said abortion was a primary issue in the election for them, compared to just 8% of men.
An October 2023 poll by the Wall Street Journal showed 77% of Democrats favored allowing a woman to have an abortion for any reason.
