Liz Cheney Calls for ‘Guardrails of Democracy’ to Step Up After Trump Win

BROOKFIELD, WISCONSIN - OCTOBER 21: Democratic presidential nominee, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris fields questions during a town hall style campaign event with former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) on October 21, 2024 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. The event was one of three Harris had scheduled today in three different swing states, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) encouraged people to become “guardrails of democracy” in light of President-elect Donald Trump winning a trip back to the White House.

Cheney, a staunch critic of Trump, posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday that now the voters have spoken, it is time for all to accept the results.

“Our nation’s democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect,” Cheney wrote. “All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections.”

But an American’s responsibility does not end when the vote is cast, she added.

“We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years,” she wrote. “Citizens across this country, our courts, members of the press and those serving in our federal, state and local governments must now be the guardrails of democracy.”

Trump garnered 277 electoral votes to Vice President Kamala Harris’ 224, the Associated Press reported. The benchmark is 270 electoral tallies for a victory.

Trump walked away with Georgia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nevada — all considered key swing states, according to a report in The Hill.

Cheney lost her seat in the House — and House GOP conference chair in 2021 before that — much due to her feud with Trump after he claimed the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Cheney and her father, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, backed Harris in her presidency run.
