The Bipartisan Blunder: Mike Johnson vs. the DOJ Surveillance Saga

WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 12: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) arrives to speak in the Rayburn Reception Room  after formally unveiling the Frederick Douglass Press Gallery in the US Capitol on February 12, 2026 in Washington, DC. Rep. Donalds (R-FL), alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT) gave remarks celebrating the passage of House Resolution 137, which formally dedicated the House Press Gallery after Frederick Douglass. Well, folks, it seems House Speaker Mike Johnson has discovered that governing in a high-stakes game of shutdown poker is way more challenging than it looks.

After dismissing a bipartisan Senate bill to open up the government as a “joke,” he’s now rolling up his sleeves for a deal. Isn’t it delightful when leaders eat their words right in front of our eyes?

In his newfound attempt at compromise, Johnson is proposing to fund the Department of Homeland Security without giving a dime to immigration enforcement agencies. Yes, the very agencies that, ironically, are vital to maintaining border security during an international crisis.

But don’t worry—he assures us this is a strategic move to “get things done.” Who needs a cohesive strategy anyway when you can just wing it, right?

Should Mike Johnson's funding proposal for DHS without immigration enforcement funding be approved?

Meanwhile, the conservative wing of the party is swapping popcorn over this debacle, lamenting that it might be a “giveaway” to those radical leftists chomping at the bit to dismantle immigration enforcement.

Rep. Keith Self isn’t holding back, calling out Johnson for the risky maneuver. It’s a classic case of a house divided: some want to play it safe, while others are prepared to roll the dice.

The real question is whether Johnson will end up being seen as the hero who saved the day or just the latest player in the political circus. The lesson? In Washington, it appears that calling the opposition “jokers” can come back to bite you—especially when you find yourself in a game where the stakes are your own credibility.
