Radio host Charlamagne Tha God on Wednesday marveled at how President-elect Donald Trump allegedly convinced Americans to “buy into” the idea that abortion is a states’ rights issue.
Vice President Kamala Harris opposed the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade and made abortion a key issue of her 2024 presidential campaign, while Trump campaigned on states making their own regulations. Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” asserted Trump’s strategy was effective at neutralizing the topic as a national debate.

“There’s something else Trump said that, man, landed, and I’m still trying to figure out how did he land this ’cause it’s so hard to get people to focus on this — the abortion thing, right? He told them, ‘I want it to be in the hands of the states,’” Charlamagne said. “So whenever you would have conversations with people about ‘Abortion’s on the ballot,’ they’d be like, ‘No, Trump just wants it to be in the hands of the state[s].’ I’ve never seen a politician convince people on a national level [that] it’s going to be local and that’s fine — and they buy into it.”
“Well, Trump can get anybody to buy into anything he say … Democrats have never been equipped to run against Trump,” former Bernie Sanders staffer Tezlyn Figaro responded. “Let’s just name it … He’s too petty, he goes too low, he don’t give a damn what y’all are talking about.”
Charlamagne and Figaro both agreed that Trump is “an entertainer first” which they claim gives him a political advantage.
Harris accused Trump of being “guilty” of “the stealing of reproductive freedom from the women of America” on the second anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade decision in June. Trump has repeatedly asserted he does not support a federal abortion ban.
Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada and New York approved measures to enshrine a right to abortion into their constitutions during the November 2024 election, according to The New York Times. Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota voted against these measures, while Colorado and Maryland now have no restrictions on the procedure.
