Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Tuesday on Fox Business that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum faces “big choices” as the U.S. intensifies its focus on Mexico’s cartel problem.

During an appearance on “Kudlow,” Gingrich said Sheinbaum is adopting what he considers the most anti-American stance by any Mexican president in modern times. As the U.S. refocuses its attention on Mexico’s cartel problems, Gingrich said that Sheinbaum faces significant decisions that could impact Mexico’s economic future.

“She’s taking the position that she is the most anti-American president in modern times for the state of Israel, and I mean, the state of Mexico. And the fact is, it’s partly because I think she’s in alliance, essentially, with the cartels,” Gingrich told host Larry Kudlow. “We have to recognize the level of power, the amount of money, frankly, the amount of military force that the cartels have in Mexico rivals the government of Mexico.”

Gingrich said there’s an urgent need for the U.S. to address this challenge.

“So I think this is a very serious long-term problem, and I’m glad to see that we’re finally turning our attention to it, and she’s going to have to face some very big choices, because an America that wants to has an enormous capacity to block Mexico development and has a great capacity to make sure that we, in fact, can force the changes we want,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich said he predicted a tough road ahead for Sheinbaum and said that without cooperation, Mexico could face a very difficult economic reality.

“I think in the long run, she’s going to have to give in, or she’ll preside over a very, very difficult economic reality,” Gingrich said.

Sheinbaum said in November that Mexico is ready to welcome back its citizens deported from the U.S. She also said she’s ready to accept non-Mexican deportees as well. Despite this, Sheinbaum has launched several initiatives that she said is designed to assist Mexicans in staying in the U.S., including an “alert button” that informs the nearest consulate when a Mexican national fears imminent detention by U.S. immigration authorities.

Trump said that he and Sheinbaum have reached an agreement to halt migration across the southern U.S. border. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said their discussion was “wonderful.” He also said that their talks covered both stemming unauthorized migration and combating drug trafficking into the United States.
