Vice President Kamala Harris has not extended a formal invitation to JD Vance and his family for a tour or sit-down at the Naval Observatory, where they are scheduled to move on Jan. 20, multiple sources from both parties disclosed to CBS News.

As Vance, his wife Usha, and their three young children prepare to move into the Naval Observatory residence on Jan. 20, they will set foot in the mansion for the first time—a residence that has hosted vice presidents since the 1970s. In a bid to prepare the home for their children—all under the age of eight—the Vances, through intermediaries, reached out to the current occupants, Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, last November.

The Vance team asked about modifications needed to childproof the residence, but a political appointee of Harris initially dismissed their inquiries, CBS News reported. Vance’s team later engaged with Navy aides who oversee the residence, and Navy officials provided a house overview before Christmas to ease the transition.

Usha Vance also held a 40-minute conversation with Emhoff last week, sources told CBS News. Harris’s team has reportedly made arrangements to accommodate the needs of the Vance children, despite the absence of a formal invitation.

Both the Vance and Harris camps have refrained from commenting on the matter. Insiders close to Harris say that she was not given the opportunity to visit the residence before her inauguration in 2021, which was a period marked by COVID restrictions and the aftermath of the Capitol riot, CBS News said. Contradictorily, advisers to former Vice President Mike Pence say that Harris and Emhoff were discreetly invited to the residence during the final days of the Trump administration, despite Trump’s reluctance to assist members of the Biden team.

Harris herself did not move into the Naval Observatory until April 2021, three months after her swearing-in, due to necessary repairs on the residence, CBS News reported. Currently, Harris’s team is preoccupied with rescheduling an overseas trip and addressing the ongoing California wildfires.

Members of the Vance and Harris teams did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
