Political analyst Mark Halperin said Friday on Newsmax that, regardless of who is confirmed as the Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair, he doesn’t believe it can “affect” the party enough to compete with the GOP.

Both Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Ken Martin and Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler are front-runner options for DNC chair. Members are set to meet and vote on Saturday. On “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Halperin was asked his thoughts on the two frontrunners. Halperin discussed the Democratic Party and how he said it’s struggling.

“In terms of the DNC race, these two people, one of these two, Martin or Wickler, who’ll probably win, they’re tacticians. They’re state chairs. They’re not national names,” Halperin said. “I don’t know that Donald Trump will even know their names, right? Because all they aspire to do is raise money and make the state parties happy. That’s an important role.”

“But you’ve seen in the past, on occasion, Ron Brown, for instance, in the Democratic Party in 1990, be leaders, coordinating, getting the message out, being on TV as a strong surrogate, getting up in the grill of the president of the other party,” Halperin added. “Those two guys, they both have their strengths, but no matter who wins, I don’t think it’s going to affect the ability of the Democratic Party to compete right now on the things that matter.”

Candidates to lead the DNC held a forum Thursday at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The contenders blamed alleged racist and sexist Americans for not voting for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Climate activists affiliated with the Sunrise Movement, meanwhile, disrupted the event.

Before commenting on the DNC options, Halperin said the party struggles with basic issues like immigration, adding they are pushing back “on the side of sanity.”

“Well, look, on the issue side and the Democrats’ current struggles. I think the issue you showed there on the border is one of the more instructive ones, right?” Halperin asked. “Democrats don’t like a lot about what Donald Trump stands for in immigration, but are they really not for deporting people who’ve committed violent crimes in the United States? It’s hard to believe. They won’t say it.”

“If you press them, they’ll reluctantly say, ‘I’m okay with that, right?’ Some of them, not all of them. But if they want to be where the people are, and if they want to be on the side of sanity, they would say, ‘Of course, good for Donald Trump to get these violent criminals who entered this country illegally out,’ but they won’t say it,” Halperin said.

Since President Donald Trump was elected last November, Democrats have continued to discuss Harris’ loss.

Some pundits had warned that Harris’ rhetoric regarding the president would be a liability, while others pointed to her lack of connection with voters, as polls showed immigration, the economy, and inflation as their top concerns. However, during an appearance on ABC’s “The View,” Harris said nothing came to mind when asked if she would change anything about the four years under the Biden-Harris administration. This, despite low approval ratings from Americans on former President Joe Biden’s leadership.
