Democratic voters are craving moderation following a grueling election cycle for the party’s candidates during which a majority of Americans appeared to reject left-wing policies at the ballot box.

Approximately 45% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents would like the Democratic Party to become “more moderate,” according to Gallup polling released Thursday. Despite a significant number of Democratic voters wanting the party to move toward the ideological center, most Democratic lawmakers appear to be holding firm to left-wing policies that appear to be political losers.

Nearly half of Democrats favoring moderation follows voters souring on the Biden-Harris administration, which delivered one of the most left-wing policy agendas in American history. Though just over a third of Democrats said the party should moderate its views when Gallup asked the question at the start of former President Joe Biden’s term, the pollster has observed an 11 point jump in favor of moderation after a GOP-trifecta has taken over Washington.

The survey polled 1,001 adults across all 50 states and was conducted between Jan. 21 and Jan. 27.

Just 29% of Democrats and left-leaning independents said the Democratic Party should become “more liberal,” amounting to a 5% drop in support for the party shifting left when Gallup last asked the question in early 2021. Only 22% of the cohort said the party should “stay the same” ideologically, according to the polling.

Just 12 Democratic senators and 46 House Democrats backed the Laken Riley Act, which Trump signed into law on Jan. 29. The law requires the detention of illegal migrants who commit theft-related crimes and other criminal offenses including assaulting law enforcement.

Similarly, more than two-thirds of House Democrats voted against legislation offered by Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace on Jan. 16 that would require the deportation of illegal migrants who commit sexual offenses or domestic violence in the United States.

Nearly 90% of Americans support deporting criminal illegal migrants, according to a January New York Times-Ipsos poll.

Just two Democratic lawmakers voted “yes” on legislation offered by Republican Florida Rep. Greg Stuebe to bar biological males from participating in women’s sports.

Approximately 79% of Americans oppose biological males competing in women’s sports, according to the same New York Times poll.

Democratic lawmakers also appear to be out of step with some of their own voters regarding Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chair Elon Musk’s cost-cutting efforts across the federal government with some using inflammatory language that could be interpreted as calling for political violence.

“What I think is really important and what the American public want is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight,” Democratic California Rep. Robert Garcia told CNN Wednesday. “This is an actual fight for democracy.”

“Goddammit, shut down the Senate,” Democratic New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver shouted during a rally protesting Musk held outside the Treasury Department on Feb. 4.  “We are at war! Anytime a person can pay $250 million into a campaign and be given access, full access to the Department of Treasury of the United States of America, we are at war!”

Musk’s job performance has a 5% net favorability rating, according to a Trafalgar Group and Insider Advantage poll conducted between Feb. 7 to Feb. 9.

Conversely, the survey found that nearly half of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents want the party to “stay the same” ideologically. Just 28% of the GOP cohort want the party to become “more conservative” while 27% want the party to moderate its views.

Republican strategists are over the moon that Democratic lawmakers do not appear to be rejecting left-wing policies despite their voters shifting right.

“Until Democrats come to terms with the fact that President Trump and Republicans are doing exactly what the American people elected them to do, their inflammatory rhetoric and staunch opposition to Donald Trump will only push voters further toward the Republican party,” House GOP-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund Press Secretary Maureen O’Toole said in a statement Thursday.
