Nadine Menendez, the wife of former Democrat New Jersey Sen. and convicted felon Bob Menendez, was herself convicted on Monday for her role in the bribery scheme that ended her husband’s career.
A Manhattan jury found Nadine Menendez guilty on numerous counts that included obstruction of justice, bribery and engaging in a conspiracy to make her husband an agent acting on behalf of Egypt. Bob Menendez, formerly the chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, was sentenced in January to 11 years in prison for engaging in a bribery scheme that involved using his position of influence to advance the interests of co-conspirators and the Egyptian government.

“Moments ago, a unanimous jury convicted Nadine Menendez for her critical role in a corruption and foreign influence scheme involving her husband, convicted former Senator Robert Menendez. Nadine Menendez and Senator Menendez were partners in crime,” acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky said in a Monday statement following the verdict. “Over the span of five years, Nadine Menendez agreed to accept and accepted all sorts of bribes – including gold bars, cash, a Mercedes-Benz convertible, and a no-show job – all in exchange for the Senator’s corrupt official acts. Together, Nadine Menendez and the Senator placed their own interests and greed ahead of the interests of the citizens the Senator was elected to serve. Today’s verdict sends the clear message that the power of government officials may not be put up for sale, and that all those who facilitate corruption will be held accountable for their actions.”
When federal agents raided the Menendez residence as part of their investigation into the couple, they discovered hidden stacks of cash and gold around the home. Prosecutors worked throughout Nadine Menendez’s trial to convince jurors that she had served as a crucial intermediary in the scheme, bringing various messages and bribes to her husband, according to The New York Times.
“She was keeping him in the loop every step of the way,” Paul M. Monteleoni, one of the prosecutors on the case, said during closing arguments, according to the NYT. Sentencing for Nadine Menendez has been scheduled for June 12, and the former senator’s wife now faces a lengthy prison sentence of her own.
