An escaped zebra that has been on the run in Tennessee for over a week, has finally been found and returned home.
According to the Associated Press, Ed, the zebra, was located by authorities on Sunday and was relocated to a pasture near the Christiana community, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said.
“Ed was airlifted and flown by helicopter back to a waiting animal trailer,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
A video shared by the sheriff’s office captures Ed, secured in a net with only his head exposed, being airlifted by helicopter to a waiting trailer. According to the sheriff’s office, Ed arrived in Christiana on May 30, but his owner reported him missing the following day.
The zebra was seen dashing along Interstate 24, prompting deputies to temporarily close the roadway. However, Ed managed to evade capture and disappeared into a wooded area.
Multiple sightings of Ed were shared on social media, including a video capturing him trotting through a neighborhood.
The zebra soon became an internet sensation, inspiring a wave of memes. One spoof post humorously depicted Ed enjoying a meal at Waffle House. Others imagined him exploring different Tennessee cities or even panhandling by the roadside.
Ed’s escapade came just a month after a runaway kangaroo caused the temporary closure of an Alabama interstate.
