President Donald Trump announced Thursday morning that Mexico will receive a 90-day extension to negotiate a trade deal with the U.S.

Following what he called a “very successful” phone call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump said Mexico will have more time to reach an agreement before a 30% tariff rate kicks in. The president had set an Aug. 1 deadline for countries to negotiate a deal with the U.S. before increased “Liberation Day” tariff rates, first unveiled in April, took effect.

“We have agreed to extend, for a 90 Day period, the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time, namely, that Mexico will continue to pay a 25% Fentanyl Tariff, 25% Tariff on Cars, and 50% Tariff on Steel, Aluminum, and Copper,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “Additionally, Mexico has agreed to immediately terminate its Non Tariff Trade Barriers, of which there were many.”

The move marks a shift from Trump’s statement just one day earlier, when he insisted the Friday deadline “stands strong, and will not be extended.”

Mexico has long been one of America’s largest trading partners. In 2024, the U.S. exported $334 billion worth of goods to Mexico and imported $505 billion in return, resulting in a trade deficit of $171 billion.

“We will be talking to Mexico over the next 90 Days with the goal of signing a Trade Deal somewhere within the 90 Day period of time, or longer,” the president said. “There will be continued cooperation on the Border as it relates to all aspects of Security, including Drugs, Drug Distribution, and Illegal Immigration into the United States.”

Meanwhile, higher tariffs will take effect Friday for other major U.S. trading partners — including Canada, India and Brazil — that have not reached agreements with the Trump administration.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
