Here we go again — the party that loves to chant about “saving democracy” is once again sprinting out the back door because… democracy didn’t go their way. That’s right. Texas Democrats, faced with the harsh reality that they don’t have the votes to stop a redistricting bill, have decided to break quorum again — by physically fleeing the state. Because if you can’t win, just don’t show up, right?
Let’s be clear here: this isn’t some principled stand. This is a group of elected officials refusing to do the one job they were actually elected to do — represent their constituents in the legislature. Instead of debating, negotiating, or, you know, voting… they’re running. Literally. Probably with their pre-packed suitcases and media talking points already drafted by DNC interns.
And where do they plan to go this time? Illinois. Because nothing screams “protecting democracy” quite like escaping to the undisputed champion of gerrymandering and political backroom deals. It’s like robbing a bank and hiding out in Vegas — subtle, guys.

What makes it even more laughable is the melodramatic press release they dropped as they ghosted their responsibilities. According to them, this is all about “protecting Black and Latino voters” and “stopping Trump’s gerrymander.” Not that the districts aren’t legal. Not that the process is unconstitutional. Just that they’re mad. And when Democrats get mad, they flee and call it heroism.
The choice was clear:
Stand by while Abbott silences millions of Black and Latino voters, or use every tool available to stop this assault on our democracy. This corrupt special session is over.#txlege pic.twitter.com/zjs2Qz4nku

Never mind the fact that thousands of Texans — yes, actual constituents — showed up to testify at hearings. Democrats claim their voices were “ignored,” but maybe it’s just that the testimony didn’t go the way they wanted. When the public doesn’t say what they want to hear, Democrats just claim the process is corrupt. That’s how it works now.
I will veto Article 10 of the budget passed by the legislature.
Article 10 funds the legislative branch.
No pay for those who abandon their responsibilities.
Stay tuned.

Oh, and in case you forgot, this exact stunt was pulled in 2021. Back then, the Dems jumped on private planes, posted selfies with boxes of White Claw, and played the victim card for over a month while legislative work in Texas came to a screeching halt. Eventually, they had to come back. The bill passed. And Texans remembered who went AWOL when their state needed governance.
Governor Abbott, to his credit, isn’t playing along with the theatrics. Last time, he threatened to arrest lawmakers the moment they crossed back into Texas. This time, it may not just be a threat. Republican Rep. Brian Harrison is already calling for immediate action — and rightfully so. If a Republican tried this in California, they’d be branded insurrectionists before their Uber left the driveway.
But somehow, this is different. Because the Left says it is.
So let’s get this straight: when Republicans redraw maps after a legitimate census and a legal process, it’s “voter suppression.” When Democrats redraw maps (and they do, in every blue state they control), it’s “ensuring representation.” When Republicans demand a quorum to vote, it’s “authoritarian.” But when Democrats bolt the chamber and skip the vote, it’s “defending democracy.”

That sound you hear? It’s not just the hypocrisy. It’s the collective eye-roll of every American who’s sick of the political toddler games.
And here’s the kicker: even if they stall the vote now, they’ll have to come back. They always do. That’s the part they leave out of the headline. At some point, they return to the statehouse, the bills pass, and the media quietly moves on.
So if this is all performative, why do it? Simple: headlines, outrage, and donation dollars. Fleeing the state isn’t about stopping a map — it’s about firing up the activist base, grabbing a CNN interview, and raking in campaign cash from coastal elites who couldn’t find Amarillo on a map.
Bottom line? If Democrats cared about democracy, they’d stay and vote. If they cared about governance, they’d show up for work. But they care about optics. About power. And if that means abandoning their state to make a political point, they’ll do it — again and again.
Just don’t call it courage. Call it what it is: a taxpayer-funded tantrum.
