Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday during a press conference that he’s convinced President Donald Trump will run for reelection in 2028 after receiving a “Trump 2028” hat from one of Trump’s “biggest supporters.”

Newsom held a press conference at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, announcing his decision to move forward with proposing new redistricting maps. While speaking to reporters, he was asked about Border Patrol making an arrest outside the venue, which he called “sick and pathetic,” before adding that Trump will run for a third term if he “rigs this election.”

“Well, I think it’s pretty sick and pathetic. And it should [say] everything you need to know of the setting that we’re under, that they chose the time, manner and place to send their district director outside right when we’re about to have this press conference,” Newsom said. “Everything you know about Donald Trump’s America. And that was top down, you know that for a fact. They’ll deny it, I’m sure, maybe they won’t deny it.”

“[Says] everything you know about the authoritarian tendencies of the President of the United States. I said it a moment ago, wake up America, wake up,” Newsom added. “You will not have a country if he rigs this election. You will have a president who will be running for a third term, mark my word. Wasn’t exaggerating when I said that I received in the mail a Trump 2028 hat from one of his biggest supporters. These guys are not screwing around. The rules do not apply to him.”

Footage captured by FOX 11 outside of the venue showed Border Patrol agents making an arrest of at least one individual. California’s El Centro Sector Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino told the outlet agents were in the city to make it a “safer place,” ripping politicians for not doing so in the first place.

“We’re here making Los Angeles a safer place. Since we won’t have politicians that’ll do that, we did that ourselves,” Bovino told the outlet.

However, alongside Newsom’s claims that the arrest outside the venue was intentional, Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed the sentiment when asked if it could be a coincidence.

“There is no way this was a coincidence!” Bass yelled in response to the NBC4 Los Angeles reporter’s question. “This was widely publicized that the governor and many of our other elected officials were having a press conference here to talk about redistricting, and they decided they were going to come and thumb their nose in front of the governor’s face.”

Despite Democrats’ accusations, Bovino told reporters that the arrest occurred during routine “roving patrols,” according to ABC7.

Newsom’s decision to move forward with the state’s redistricting plans, comes in response to Texas’ redistricting in July. During the launch of the Democratic governor’s state gerrymandering campaign, Newsom claimed that California would not “sit idle,” alleging Trump and his administration shreds the U.S.’ “democracy before our very eyes.”

The redistricting plans aim to remove about six Republicans from California’s House delegation, transferring redistricting authority from the independent commission to the state Legislature. Voters are expected to decide on Nov. 4 whether the Legislature should control the maps.

Notably, the announcement comes before voters have had the chance to view the proposed maps, which are expected to become public on Friday, according to FOX 11’s Elex Michaelson. A portal for public feedback was opened Wednesday evening on the California State Assembly’s website.
