Amy McGrath announced on Monday that she is once again running for Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell’s seat.

McGrath, a former Marine fighter pilot, said in a post to X announcing her candidacy that “Kentuckians deserve someone battle-tested and ready to fight for them on day one.” She is joining a growing field of candidates in the race to succeed McConnell, who announced his retirement in February.

McGrath’s campaign did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

The former Marine was soundly defeated by McConnell in the 2020 Kentucky Senate election, despite significantly outraising him. She notched over $94,120,557 in fundraising during the 2020 race, compared to McConnell’s $71,351,350, OpenSecrets reported.

Moreover, McGrath notably outraised McConnell and also spent more than double what he did from July 2020 to September 2020, Kentucky.com reported.

Additionally, McGrath lost to Republican Rep. Andy Barr in the 2018 race for the state’s 6th congressional district. Barr announced on Apr. 22 that he was launching a bid to succeed McConnell in 2026.

“Andy Barr and President Trump beat Amy McGrath once, and they’ll do it again. Together, they defeated her in what was once a battleground district, despite her millions from coastal elites and endless airtime from the liberal media,” Alex Bellizzi, a campaign spokesman for Barr, said in a statement provided to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Other Republicans running for the open Senate seat include former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron and Lexington businessman Nate Morris, Spectrum News 1 reported. Meanwhile, other Democrats running in the upcoming Kentucky Senate race include State Rep. Pamela Stevenson, former CIA officer and military veteran Joel Willett and Nate Forsythe, who is an attorney, the outlet reported.

McGrath previously compared President Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 election to the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. She also claimed in a June 30 X post that Trump and Republicans are “making America weaker again.”
