Salem Radio Network host Scott Jennings recalled Thursday that Democratic Attorney General Letitia James of New York campaigned on a promise to target President Donald Trump during a discussion about her indictment for mortgage fraud.

A federal grand jury indicted James on two counts on Thursday about mortgage fraud allegations surrounding a house in Norfolk, Virginia. Jennings said on “CNN NewsNight” that James’ claims about being targeted for political reasons rang hollow, citing her track record.

“Look, I mean, Letitia James is the absolute worst possible poster child for the argument of selective prosecution. Her entire political career has been on the idea of selectively prosecuting one person, Donald J. Trump,” Jennings said.

WATCH:

“Whether you think the merits of the case are strong or weak, or how you think it‘s going to play out, going out tonight and crying and whining and fussing about selective prosecution when it comes to Letitia James, who ran an entire campaign saying she was going to go after Trump, the cases she brought, it was only because of Trump, I don’t think the American people are going to have too much sympathy for it,” Jennings continued. “But she’ll get to go to court, she’ll get to make her arguments and we’ll see what happens.”

James sued Trump in September 2022, alleging that he overstated the value of his real estate holdings to obtain loans. This came after she vowed to investigate Trump during her initial campaign for attorney general in 2018, during which she labeled him an “illegitimate president.”

A New York appeals court ruled in August that the $355 million civil penalty issued by New York Judge Arthur Engoron in February 2024 violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against excessive fines.

James also made several statements that showed hostility towards the National Rifle Association during her 2018 campaign for attorney general. She promised to “target the NRA” in a July 2018 release by her campaign, vowing to “investigate the legitimacy of the NRA as a charitable institution.”

“The NRA holds [itself] out as a charitable organization, but in fact, [it] really [is] a terrorist organization,” she told Ebony magazine during her 2018 campaign. (RELATED: NRA Scores Court Victory Against NY AG Letitia James)

James sued the gun-rights organization in August 2020, seeking the group’s dissolution. A New York judge, Joel M. Cohen, ruled that James could not seek dissolution of the NRA in March 2022.
