WASHINGTON — Environmental Protection Agency Administrator (EPA) Lee Zeldin told reporters Tuesday that he intends to share any new information he learns about geoengineering with the American people and that all he cares about is “the truth.”
The EPA unveiled online resources to inform Americans about the most up-to-date scientific findings, research and related information on contrails and geoengineering on June 10. Zeldin said in response to a Daily Caller News Foundation question on geoengineering Tuesday that while he holds “no bias” on the issue, the agency has updated the database since they first released it and that if he were to learn “anything new tomorrow” about geoengineering, it will be publicly released.
“I don’t believe that anybody should be playing God with the weather, and I have concerns about solar radiation modification, stratospheric aerosol injection, marine cloud brightening and more,” Zeldin told reporters Tuesday. “A lot of the questions I ask are beyond the scope, equities, and jurisdiction of EPA. But that’s not going to stop me from asking the questions. It’s not going to stop me from securing the answer, even if the answer is coming from outside of the agency.”
“Geoengineering encompasses a broad range of activities that intentionally attempt to cool the Earth or remove certain gases from the atmosphere,” the EPA states on its website.
Contrails are thin clouds that form when water vapor condenses and freezes around small particles in aircraft exhaust, according to the UCAR Center for Science Education. In recent years, some skeptics have worried that contrails are actually the result of chemicals being sprayed by the government intentionally.
The EPA’s online resources address condensation trails or “contrails,” solar geoengineering activities and note that “the U.S. government is not engaged in any form of outdoor solar geoengineering testing.” Zeldin told reporters that if he learns anything about geoengineering, he will direct his staff to add it to the database to benefit the American public.
“It’s my opinion that everything that I, as administrator of EPA, know about the topic, the public should also know about,” Zeldin said, and cautioned that “with so many questions still outstanding on the science, any research … that’s being done should be conducted indoors, not outdoors.”
“I’ve encouraged the public who care about this topic to make sure that they are always speaking accurately. When they post a picture on the internet of a trail behind jet aircraft and state that what they’re posting is stratospheric aerosol injection, they’re undermining their own credibility,” Zeldin continued. “In some cases, people are posting actual photos and videos. In other cases, it’s artificial intelligence (AI) that people are circulating.”
