Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is under intense pressure as a high-profile corruption investigation exposes alleged wrongdoing among his closest associates.
According to Fox News, the probe, involving accusations of siphoning around $100 million from the country’s energy sector, comes amid the ongoing war with Russia and has sparked widespread concern about government integrity.
“Ukrainians don’t have any motivation to fight now because of enormous human rights violations and also because of this corruption now exposed,” a former government official told Fox News Digital, speaking on condition of anonymity. “People inside the country are already seeing this corruption, and this is just part of the corrupt swamp. Zelenskyy is part of the problem.”
The investigation, known as “Operation Midas,” has focused on figures connected to the president through his entertainment business Kvartal 95. Businessman Tymur Mindich, a co-owner of the company, has been accused of leading a network that profited from energy contracts. Reports indicate investigators found bags of cash and even a gold-plated toilet in his apartment.
“They were introduced many years ago and were running the business of 95 Kvartal,” the former official said. “Tymur had an apartment with golden toilets that was in the same building as Zelenskyy’s, and in 2021 Zelenskyy celebrated his birthday in Tymur’s apartment.”
Former Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, another figure under scrutiny, is accused of abuse of office and building multiple luxury homes in Kyiv. Both cases have fueled public anger and doubts over whether wartime funds were being misused.
In a nightly address on Nov. 10, Zelenskyy stressed accountability. “Everyone who put together a corrupt scheme must receive a clear legal response. There must be criminal verdicts,” he said, emphasizing the importance of integrity in Ukraine’s energy sector and praising anti-corruption investigators.
Despite the allegations, critics say the president is unlikely to step aside. “Zelenskyy is using his extraordinary PR talent and will not step down in this probe,” the former official said. “He had a vertical of power, an unbreakable image, all the attention of the media.”
Some Ukrainians, disillusioned by the revelations, are reportedly turning their attention abroad.
“Many Ukrainians believe in Donald Trump now, because he’s the only person who actually changed the narrative and changed the way this war is going,” the official added, highlighting the deepening political polarization amid the ongoing conflict.
The scandal threatens to overshadow Zelenskyy’s leadership and could further strain public confidence as Ukraine navigates both war and governance crises.
