Newly released emails from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate show that the disgraced financier ended his friendship with former President Bill Clinton after accusing him of dishonesty, according to records handed over to Congress this week.
According to the New York Post, the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday released more than 20,000 pages of documents connected to Epstein’s communications with influential figures.
Among them were exchanges showing Epstein’s relationships with Clinton and former Obama White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, who is now Goldman Sachs’ chief legal officer.
In one January 2016 email, Epstein wrote that he had cut ties with Clinton because the former president had given him conflicting statements.
“He swore, with whole-hearted conviction to me that he had done something, [but] he had forgotten that he also swore the exact opposite to me only weeks before,” Epstein wrote.
When asked about the comments, a Clinton spokesperson responded, “Who knows what they’re talking about. What we do know and have always said is that President Clinton knew nothing about Epstein’s heinous crimes and hadn’t spoken to him in twenty years. Now here it is in black and white.”
Earlier in the exchange, Ruemmler appeared to reference Epstein’s frustration with another unnamed individual, calling the person “very close to being a psychopath” who “has no conscience.”
Ruemmler and Epstein often discussed politics in the lead-up to the 2016 election, according to the emails. A Goldman Sachs spokesperson said Ruemmler’s contact with Epstein was limited to “a common client that originated as an Epstein referral” during her time at the law firm Latham & Watkins.
Despite Epstein’s claim that he and Clinton had fallen out, the former president continued to appear in later email discussions. In 2018, physicist Lawrence Krauss proposed a “men of the world conference” in a message to Epstein, listing Clinton, Kevin Spacey, Al Franken, and Woody Allen among possible invitees.
Clinton’s ties to Epstein date back to the 1990s, when the financier donated to Clinton’s political campaigns and later to the Clinton Foundation. Visitor logs show Epstein visited the White House more than a dozen times, and flight records indicate Clinton traveled on Epstein’s private jet—nicknamed the “Lolita Express”—over 20 times.
Clinton has repeatedly denied knowing about Epstein’s crimes or visiting his private island, though former aides and accusers have claimed otherwise. The House Oversight Committee, which subpoenaed the Clintons over the summer as part of its Epstein investigation, says both have yet to testify.
