President Donald Trump labeled Democratic Seattle Mayor-elect Katie Wilson a “communist” while taking questions from reporters in the Oval Office on Monday.
Trump stated that he is willing to move the 2026 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup out of Seattle if they think there will be any trouble. He warned that Wilson, who won her mayoral election on Wednesday, is “beyond liberal” and will implement communist policies.
“If we think there’s gonna be a sign of any trouble, I would ask Johnny to move that to a different city. We have a lot of cities that would love to have it, number one. And we’ll do it very safely. So if we think there’s a problem in Seattle, we have a very, very liberal slash communist mayor, I would say, you know, certainly beyond just liberal. I watched her over the other weekend. Wow, I said that’s another beauty we’ve got there,” Trump said.

Resurfaced footage from September showed Wilson promising that she would not allow private grocery stores to close and that she would establish government-run stores.
“We cannot allow giant grocery chains to stomp all over our communities, close stores that will leave behind food deserts,” Wilson said. “Together, we can build a Seattle where fresh food is for everyone, not just for those who can afford it. Food deserts are not natural, corporations create them when they abandon our communities.”
The mayor-elect has also promised to appoint a cabinet comprised of “exceptional leaders whose lived experiences reflect the diversity of Seattle’s Black, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander, Latinx/Hispanic, and People of Color communities as well as that of women, immigrants and refugees, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, people with disabilities, people of all faith traditions, and residents from every socioeconomic background,” according to her website. She has also promised to protect Seattle’s status as a sanctuary city and defy the Trump’s administration’s immigration enforcement.
The Washington Post editorial board wrote in a Sunday op-ed that Wilson “has little experience but plenty of bad ideas.” The board warned that Wilson’s policies will lead businesses to exit the city in large droves over her support of raising already high minimum wage and taxes.
Wilson also criticized Democratic Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell’s sweeps of homeless encampments. She instead has called for putting homeless people in shelters and empty housing to avoid “public disorder and misery.”
The socialist mayor-elect has been widely compared to Democratic New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who has pledged to implement government-run grocery stores and buses, raise the minimum wage t0 $30 an hour and establish an agency where social workers respond to non-violent 911 calls instead of police officers.
