President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday aimed at fast-tracking scientific discovery through artificial intelligence, directing the Energy Department and its national labs to develop an integrated AI platform using both current and future supercomputing resources.

According to CBS News, the initiative, dubbed the “Genesis Mission,” seeks to speed research across federal, academic, and private-sector datasets in science, engineering, energy, and healthcare.

The White House hopes the program will accelerate breakthroughs in areas like disease therapies, fusion energy, and advanced materials.

Michael Krastios, the president’s science adviser, called the mission “the largest marshaling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program.”

He said AI will be used to automate experiment design, run complex simulations, and generate predictive models, potentially shortening discovery timelines from years to days or even hours.

“By fusing massive federal data sets, advanced supercomputing capabilities, and world-leading scientific facilities, the Genesis mission will empower scientists to test bolder hypotheses and discover breakthroughs currently unreachable,” Krastios said.

The White House noted that the effort will initially utilize the Department of Energy’s 17 national labs, which already operate some of the world’s most advanced supercomputers.

Officials also indicated plans to expand the program with additional AI supercomputing capacity from private companies, including Nvidia and Dell, which have expressed interest in participating.

Funding details remain unclear, and White House officials suggested that Congress may need to provide further support to ensure the initiative’s long-term success.

“We will leverage all available resources and, with the help of Congress, continue to invest increasing amounts for the success of the mission,” one official said.

Officials expressed optimism about the potential impact on healthcare, noting that AI could help scientists better understand diseases that are currently considered death sentences.

“We’ve seen significant progress in the last five years,” one official said, “but it’s nothing compared to what we’re going to see in the next five years.”

The Genesis Mission represents a major federal push to integrate AI into scientific research, signaling a new era of accelerated discovery with supercomputing at its core.
