Well, isn’t this just the kind of grand opening you’d expect from the incoming Mamdani administration? Before the guy even takes the oath of office, his pick for director of appointments has already flamed out in spectacular fashion — and over something that really shouldn’t have required any vetting wizardry to catch. But hey, who needs a background check when you’re building a progressive utopia in the ashes of common sense?
Catherine Almonte Da Costa — remember the name, or don’t, because she’s already gone — was all set to help New York’s next mayor staff up with “top talent.” That was the big plan. Until, of course, some old social media posts came crawling out of the woodwork, complete with references to “money hungry Jews,” “rich Jewish peeps,” and, in case the point wasn’t clear enough, dubbing a train line the “Jew train.” Charming stuff.
Meet Catherine Almonte Da Costa, Zohran Mamdani’s pick for Director of Appointments in his new administration:

These posts, reportedly made over a decade ago, were dredged up by the Anti-Defamation League, which — and let’s give credit where it’s due — actually managed to hit pause on their typical political programming long enough to call out something truly vile. The ADL’s post on X was uncharacteristically direct: tweeting things like “money hungry Jews” is indefensible. No hemming, no hawing, just a flat-out condemnation. Shocking.

Should past social media conduct influence hiring decisions in government roles?
So what does Da Costa do? She deletes her account (classic move) and offers up a resignation with the usual grab-bag of crisis PR talking points. You know the ones — “this doesn’t reflect who I am,” “deep regret,” and of course, “as the mother of Jewish children,” which seems like an oddly specific postscript for someone trying to distance herself from antisemitic commentary. Almost like she hoped that little footnote might soften the blow. It didn’t.
And let’s be honest here — this is the kind of mess that gets brushed under the rug when you prioritize ideology over integrity. Mamdani, a darling of the New York City far-left, wanted someone who could fill the ranks with fellow true believers. Apparently, antisemitism and anti-cop rhetoric weren’t dealbreakers, at least not until the public got wind of it.
Let’s not forget: in addition to the antisemitic remarks, Da Costa allegedly posted derogatory comments about law enforcement, including calling the NYPD “piggies.” Because of course she did. It’s practically a rite of passage in these circles — insult the cops, disparage half the city, and get promoted. That’s the résumé builder nowadays.
So now we’ve got a mayor-elect scrambling to do damage control before he’s even taken office, and a city that’s once again watching the same tired political circus roll into town with new names but the same agenda. Maybe Mamdani was too busy dreaming up new ways to defund police or cozy up to his DSA pals to bother vetting the people he’s about to hand the keys to.
And if you’re wondering where the press corps is on this, don’t hold your breath. You won’t see much outrage from the usual outlets. Swap out the political affiliations and imagine, just for a second, if someone nominated by a Republican had a decade-old post referring to “money hungry Jews.” You’d never hear the end of it. Headlines. Panel discussions. Boycotts. But in this case? A quick resignation, a neatly packaged apology, and everyone’s supposed to move on. Nothing to see here, folks.
This isn’t just about one bad hire. It’s about a culture of arrogance that assumes accountability is optional and that past bigotry can be wiped away with a press release. You’d think a city that’s already reeling from crime, economic decay, and endless bureaucratic failure might demand a little more from its incoming leadership.
Instead, we get the “Jew train.” And a mayor-elect who’s still getting his team from Twitter. Buckle up, New York. It’s going to be a long four years.
