Former MSNBC host Joy Reid acknowledged in a Monday interview that Renee Nicole Good — the woman fatally shot by an ICE agent on January 7 — was part of a group trained to interfere with federal immigration enforcement.
Speaking with radio host Angela Yee on the podcast “Way Up,” Reid said Good belonged to a group of so-called “ICE interrupters” who use their bodies — and their “white privilege” — to physically obstruct immigration agents during operations. The revelation comes as tensions between federal agents and left-wing activists reach a boiling point in Minneapolis, where ICE has been conducting targeted operations in response to a multi-billion-dollar welfare fraud investigation.
“This woman was part of a group of people who they train to try to be ICE interrupters,” Reid said, describing their tactics as filming ICE agents and blocking arrests. “They’re mainly white people, which is what we asked them to do, right? Because black people… we can’t put our bodies on the line because cops will shoot us.”
Reid went further, framing the activists’ efforts as a response to narratives involving white women allegedly under threat from illegal immigrants. “White women have been taking the lead in being the ones to step forward and challenge ICE,” she said, citing the highly publicized killings of Laken Riley, Rachel Morin, and Jocelyn Nungaray — all murdered by illegal immigrants under the Biden administration.
Good and her wife, also white, reportedly tried to block ICE agents from making arrests by parking their SUV in the path of an enforcement operation. That act of obstruction ended with Good being fatally shot.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the ICE operation on January 7 netted several illegal immigrants with serious criminal records, including sex offenders and individuals convicted of drug and assault charges.
The federal crackdown comes after reports of widespread fraud in Minnesota’s social services system, particularly involving Somali immigrants. Federal authorities estimate at least $9 billion was stolen, with ongoing investigations probing whether any of the funds were funneled to Al-Shabaab, a radical Islamist terror group.
Despite the serious nature of the crimes involved, Reid’s commentary focused largely on race and the use of “white privilege” as a political tool. The statements quickly reignited criticism of Reid, who has a long history of racially charged rhetoric. Critics have accused her of stoking racial tensions and promoting divisive narratives, especially during election coverage and heated national moments.

Tensions in Minneapolis remain high. ICE continues to ramp up its operations in the area, while left-wing activists, state Democrats, and even the Minnesota attorney general are attempting to sue the federal government to halt enforcement actions. But with Good’s death now directly tied to a deliberate attempt to obstruct law enforcement, the situation has taken a sharp turn — and the national spotlight is shifting back toward immigration, crime, and the consequences of defying federal law.
The Biden administration has yet to respond to the details revealed in Reid’s interview.
