Pope Leo has been invited to become a part of President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace.”
Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican‘s top diplomatic official, confirmed the invitation Wednesday, NewsNation reported.
Pope Leo is the first American pope and has criticized of some of Trump’s policies.
“The pope has received an invitation and we are considering what to do,” Parolin said. “I believe it will be something that requires a bit of time for consideration before giving a response.”
The board was formed to end the conflict in Gaza, but Trump has since said it will resolve conflicts globally.
Some countries — like Israel and Egypt — have joined the board, while others are proceeding with caution.
Diplomats have warned the board could harm the work of the United Nations, the outlet reported.
Leo was elected pope last May and has condemned conditions for Palestinians living in Gaza several times, including on Christmas Eve.
The pope leads the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. He rarely joins international boards.
