Court filings connected to the FBI’s recent seizure of 2020 election materials in Georgia are set to become public, opening a new window into a closely watched federal investigation tied to Fulton County’s election operations.
A federal judge has directed the government to unseal documents related to the FBI raid that removed hundreds of boxes of election records from a county facility outside Atlanta, per Fox News.
The order could soon reveal additional details about why agents targeted the site and what evidence they were seeking.
U.S. District Judge J.P. Boulee, who was nominated to the bench by President Donald Trump in 2019, ruled that the filings should no longer remain under seal.
He instructed the government to submit the documents, including the search warrant affidavit, by Tuesday, with limited redactions.
“Although Petitioners originally filed this case under seal, both parties have now indicated to the Court that they do not oppose unsealing the docket or the motions filed by Petitioners,” Boulee wrote in his order.
“Moreover, Respondent has stated that it does not oppose the unsealing of the search warrant affidavit and any other papers associated with the warrant subject to the redaction of the names of nongovernmental witnesses,” the order continued.
The FBI executed the search warrant on Jan. 28 at Fulton County’s primary election warehouse in Union City, located south of Atlanta. The operation focused on records connected to the 2020 general election, according to court filings.
A warrant cover sheet provided to county officials listed a broad range of materials sought by federal agents. Those items included physical ballots, tabulator tapes, electronic ballot images and voter rolls tied to the 2020 vote.
Following the raid, Fulton County officials moved quickly to challenge the seizure.
Last week, county leaders filed a motion asking for the return of roughly 656 boxes of original election materials taken by the FBI. The motion argued that the records were essential county property and sought clarity on the scope of the federal investigation.
Fulton County, one of the most heavily Democratic counties in Georgia, has remained under intense scrutiny since the 2020 presidential election. President Donald Trump lost Georgia to former President Joe Biden, marking a key battleground defeat.
Trump has repeatedly maintained that widespread voter fraud affected the outcome in Georgia, a claim that has kept the state’s election processes at the center of national political debate.
The unsealed filings are expected to provide new insight into the federal government’s actions and could fuel renewed attention on how Fulton County’s 2020 election was conducted.
